Two days. Two real problems from Alfa Laval’s Additive Manufacturing Technology Centre.

AMTC in Eskilstuna is moving from development into production 3D printing. Two things slow them down, and both come down to the same thing: the geometry of a legacy spare part often exists only as a scanned paper drawing. Your job is to get a machine to read those drawings.

 

Alfa Laval provides real sample drawings and data, wewill give you AI tools at kick-off. Mentors and engineers are on site both days.

The challenges

01 · From 2D drawing to printable 3D model

Read a scanned engineering drawing — PDF or JPG, multi-view, with dimensions and tolerances — and generate a 3D model in STEP or STL. Computer vision to find the views, OCR for the dimensions, geometry reconstruction from there. A good solution also knows when it can’t be trusted and says so.

Today an engineer re-models each part by hand in CAD. That is the bottleneck.

02 · Predicting cost from a drawing

Same input, different output: what will this part cost to print? Volume, weight, build orientation, how many fit on a build plate, machine time, material. All estimated from the 2D drawing, before any 3D model exists. Every number in the cost report has to show the assumption behind it.

Today this is manual work, and it limits how fast AMTC can answer internal requests.

Who should apply

Students and professionals. Engineering, Computer Science, Production, Design –  the challenges need all of it. Teams of 4–6.

Apply as a team or on your own. We form teams on the first morning.

Places are limited and applications are reviewed for skill fit, so apply early.

Day 1 — 09:00 registration · 09:30 challenge briefings from Alfa Laval, MITC tour · 10:30 team formation · 11:00 build, with mentor check-ins · 17:00 close

Day 2 — 09:00 build · 11:30 pitch training · 14:30 final presentations · 16:30 awards

Judged on feasibility, usability, and whether the approach could scale beyond a demo.
